quality engineer

The quality engineer is responsible for enhancing and improving plant processes, products, and services through the implementation of problem-solving tools, prevention methods, quality-at-the-source, and continual improvement techniques. A successful applicant will be self-driven, take on problems as opportunities, have exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving capability and communicate with appropriate plant and cross-functional personnel to drive quality improvements.

essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Promote the effective implementation of the quality management system to assure compliance with customer and regulatory requirements and the standards set by corporate policies, and plant procedures.
  • Works with the foundry manager to ensure individuals performing functions affecting quality are trained, demonstrate the appropriate behaviors, and are proficient in necessary skills to achieve desired performance results.
  • Conducts root cause analysis and implementation of corrective action for process/product-related concerns. Goal being to reduce immediate risk and prevent recurrence of event.
  • Implements performance measurements necessary to effectively evaluate performance and trends in product quality, services, customer satisfaction and the cost of poor quality.
  • Works with Engineering and Operations to solve in-house quality concerns, conducts reviews of nonconforming product, recommends disposition.
  • Create and revise procedures and work instructions to stabilize and improve quality assurance and quality control processes and activities.
  • Assess supplier capabilities and monitor supplier quality to ensure desired levels of performance. Work with suppliers to resolve performance issues to improve incoming material quality, on time delivery and cost.
  • Provide coaching and development to Quality Technicians and Quality Inspectors as required to ensure quality standards and continuous improvement objectives are achieved.
  • Perform capability studies at required processes to determine stability, capability and provide recommendations for necessary improvements.
  • Participate and/or lead layered process audits to continually improve internal quality and production.
  • Build, improve the PFMEA, control plan, and standard work instructions throughout the foundry.
  • Take the lead and drive scrap reduction initiatives.
  • Track and report out on quality KPIs; scrap %, COPQ, audit findings, etc.

qualifications and requirments: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university (preferably in Quality, Engineering, or Science discipling).
  • 2-3 years of quality experience within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Experience performing supplier, internal and layered audits.
  • Advanced problem-solving aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System requirements.
  • Experience in green sand foundry process control and quality system preferred.

preferred experience: 

  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification.
  • Lean certification from a reputable organization or certifying body.
